There’s so much to look forward to when you’re on a trip away. There’s a new culture to experience and learn from, a climate different from the one you’re used to, and awe-inspiring places to explore.

The best thing about traveling to a new place for many is the food, especially because our memories are connected to our taste and smell. Have you ever tried to recreate a dish you enjoyed abroad and were immediately transported back to your vacation? We know that feeling well here at High Tide Los Cabos!

That’s why we’ve decided to run through a list of our favorite things to eat and drink in Baja California, so you can always have a piece of Baja with you.

For now, here are some of our favorite things to eat and drink while you’re in Baja…

Tostada

In Baja, you have to try a Mexican classic: the tostada.

Wondering what the difference is between a taco and a tostada? A tostada is an open-faced crispy taco.

For the ultimate culinary experience, pair it with smoked salmon and Baja white sauce.

Ceviche

Ceviche is a South American dish where diced raw fish or shellfish is marinated in citrus and cooked through a process called denaturation. It might be South American, but we love it here in Baja, too!

This process consists of the acid from the citrus cooking the fish – turning it from raw to opaque.

Top Tip: you can enjoy this as an appetizer alongside tortilla chips for dipping.

Lion Claw Clam

Lion Claw Clam got its name because the shell’s ridges are similar to a lion’s paw. You must try it when in Baja California.

Top Tip: add ceviche on top to make the most of the freshness and flavor.

Pan de Muertos

In English, Pan de Muertos translates to Day of the Dead Bread. It’s a vital component of The Day of the Dead celebrations we enjoy here in Mexico!

Pan de Muertos is placed on an altar with chocolate and tamales, in honor of our loved ones who are no longer with us.

If you’re visiting Baja from mid-October to November, you can purchase this bread to try!

Clamato

Interestingly, Clamato is a Canadian drink but it’s very popular in Baja California! Enjoy this drink as an accompaniment to a meal; it’s made from Clama and tomato juice.

Clamato has a bit of a kick, so be careful! It’s thanks to its other vital ingredients: hot sauce, lemon juice, and black pepper.

Olives and Olive Oil

It’s not just wine that Baja California excels at; the region also produces gourmet-quality olives and olive oils.

Once again, we have the sunny climate to thank! Our perfect conditions mean that the olives have a rich, unique flavor with peppery undertones.

Sometimes, simplicity is best. Sit out on a veranda and dig into our fresh olives. You won’t know if you’re in Mexico or the Mediterranean!

Mexican Chocolate Clam

You could be forgiven for thinking that there’s chocolate in this dish! This clam got its name from its rich, dark shell cover, which resembles chocolate.

It can be enjoyed simply on its own or incorporated into creamy soups.

Tamales

Tamales are a popular dish – and with good reason. This delicious corn-based mixture is then filled with various meats, beans, or cheese.

In our opinion, you should go for shredded pork, chicken, olives, and avocados. Buen provecho!

Smoked Marlin

Smoked Marlin is a local specialty in Baja, so it’s definitely one you can’t miss!

This versatile protein is usually smoked on beech wood and can be enjoyed in salads or on its own with a dip.

Pitahaya

Pitahaya is a classic fruit from several different cacti that are native to southern Mexico.

You can use a knife to chop the fruit in half, then use a spoon to peel the skin and slice the pulp into small pieces.

Pitahaya is packed full of vitamins; if you want even more of a sugar rush, it goes great with honey.

Margarita

There’s contention about where the Margarita originated from, so we won’t get into that!

However, can you imagine anything better than sipping a margarita on one of our beautiful beaches?

We can’t!

When in Baja, definitely get yourself a margarita…or two.

There’s nothing more refreshing after a day of kayaking and snorkeling at the famous El Arco in Los Cabos! Especially if you add a little extra zing with jalapeños…

Agua Fresca is a refreshing fruit drink made simply of fruit blended with water, lime juice, and sweetener.
