Are Tourists Safe in Mexico?

From delicious tacos and welcoming locals to a rich Mayan history and beautiful beaches, Mexico’s reputation is well-known across the world. Yet one of our most commonly asked questions is: is it safe to travel to Mexico?

While Mexico does have high instances of crime and cartel-related activity, most towns and tourist areas are safe to visit if you stick to popular destinations and travel with reputable tour guides. While specific areas vary in safety, Mexico is generally a safe destination for tourists and is an international favorite, as the country had almost 98 million visitors in 2019!

As with most well-populated global cities, there are scams and pickpockets to watch out for in Mexico. Staying alert, wearing a money belt, researching your destination, and using official Sitios (taxi ranks) and first-class bus companies to travel (especially by night) will help you stay safe.

At High Tide Los Cabos, we understand that traveling to Mexico can be daunting for tourists, especially if you haven’t visited before. This blog will break down the latest safety advice for visiting Mexico, plus travel tips and some of the safest places for tourists to visit.

We’re located in sunny Los Cabos, on the southern tip of Baja California Sur. If you’re planning a trip to our part of the world, get in touch! Our local team is happy to help answer any questions and share some of our epic adventure tours of Los Cabos

Is it Safe to Travel to Mexico?

Before planning a trip to Mexico, we recommend visiting the US State Department’s Mexico Travel Advisory page to check your destination. It’s important to remember that government warnings are often issued on a national level.

For example, if you see a Level 3 warning for travel to certain parts of Mexico issued by the US State Department, that doesn’t necessarily mean you should be concerned about booking a vacation. That warning level could be due to an increase in crime on the other side of the country. Much like mass shootings in the US do not impact the rest of the country’s safety and ability to travel.

For further information on traveling to Mexico, visit the US State Department’s world map to see which areas are listed as Level 2, or where to ‘Exercise Increased Caution’. You’ll see that most European cities are also issued Level 2, like Italy and France.

At the time of writing, the vast majority of the world is considered Level 3 or higher warning due to Covid concerns or political instability. Notably, many of Mexico’s popular tourist destinations are only Level 2.

Where Are the Safest Places to Visit in Mexico?

With vibrant cities and beautiful beaches, Mexico has plenty of welcoming locations to choose from across the country.

Cancun is a Safe and Popular Tourist Destination

Cancun is the most popular Mexican destination on our list, due to its beaches and Mayan pyramids. Not only that, Cancun has a much lower crime rate than many Mexican cities. The locals are welcoming, most people speak English, and it’s very easy to navigate from the airport.

If you love outdoor activities, Cancun is ripe with jet skis, snorkeling, and scuba diving so you can explore the world beneath the water, as well as the city! As always, we recommend not carrying lots of cash or your passport around and asking your concierge for reputable taxi and tour companies.

Mexico City is a Bustling Safe City for Tourists

The capital city of Mexico is a thriving hotspot of culture and vibrant cuisine and is the second-most visited destination in Mexico after Cancun. You could spend weeks exploring the city and still have plenty left to discover. Particularly as the city has more than 150 museums!

As with many major cities, pickpocketing and petty crime are likely in tourist areas. Roma and Condesa are safe to stroll around by nightfall, but we recommend getting Ubers to other areas. While you’re there, be sure to visit La Casa Azul — famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo’s former home and studio.

How to Stay Safe In Mexican Beach Destinations

Be careful in the sun

Many tourists suffer from sunburn that can cause discomfort and stop you from enjoying your vacation to the fullest. Wear sunscreen and reapply if you’re going in the water! Cover your skin and use umbrellas if you’re out on the beach for extended periods.

Heed any beach warnings

Some beaches around Los Cabos can experience big waves and strong currents. Always pay attention to signs and warnings to be sure you stay safe. Check with the lifeguard if you’re unsure where to surf or swim.

Alcohol and the sea don’t mix well

Be careful if you plan to enjoy a few beers on the beach. Swimming in the open ocean, or doing any water-based activities at all, requires your full capacity for safety.

Listen to professional advice

If you’re doing any fun, water-based activities, always listen to the advice of professional tour guides and operators. Familiarize yourself with the safety protocols and ensure you understand how to operate any vehicles or equipment.

Watch your belongings

If you’re out on the beach and leave your bags to go swimming, make sure someone is watching out for your stuff. It’s easy to have things stolen if you’re nowhere nearby and are too busy enjoying the sea!
